How to get a rough idea of pricing

Note that the prices listed are intended as a general guide only. Your final quote will depend on viewing photos of the piece of furniture. I specialise solely in seat weaving and do not offer structural repairs, so items must be in sound condition before work begins. Occasionally, removing an old seat can reveal hidden damage or weaknesses in the frame. If this happens, I will let you know right away and discuss the options before proceeding.

Hand caned pieces
Most cane patterns are based on the traditional six-way weave, which 
involves six stages to create. Chairs and other furniture will have holes drilled around the frame - some fully through, others “blind” holes that don’t go all the way through, often on backs or arms of higher-quality pieces. I can replace any pattern, including sunburst, medallion, double-sided, or blind work.

Pricing will depend on the number of holes, whether any are shared between panels, and whether they are through or blind holes. Smaller chairs usually cost from £1.80 per hole, while larger or curved pieces can go up to £2.50 per hole. Special designs such as sunburst, medallion, blind, or double-sided work require extra time and skill, and attract a premium.

Repairing individual broken strands isn’t usually possible, as older panels are often fragile. Full replacement is generally the most reliable option. I’m happy to provide a precise quote once I’ve seen your piece in person or in clear pictures by email.

Sheet/Loom Cane
Many modern chairs feature sheet cane, which can be identified by the continuous wooden spline around the cane. Please send clear photos of any sheet cane items and I can provide a quote accordingly. 

Rush Chairs 
Natural rush seats can be woven using either hand-twisted rush or pre-twisted rush cord. Hand-twisted rush is far more time-intensive, so it does come at a higher cost. As a guide, replacing the seat of a standard dining chair in pre-twisted rush is usually around £100, with carver-style chairs starting at roughly £140. Hand-twisted rush seats begin at around £170 but this does depend on availability of materials at the time.

Danish Cord
Danish cord seats are created using a specially produced paper fibre cord, typically woven around a series of L-shaped nails fixed to the inside of the seat rails (occasionally staples were used instead). As a guideline, rewoven seats in a standard “two-by-two” pattern on a single-rail dining or side chair usually start from £100.
